Faculty Innovative Teaching Grant

“Virtual Reality and Radiology Procedures: Looking Towards the Future of Procedural Training,” received funding from the Funds for Innovative Teaching of Emory University. This is a resident-driven project among current R1s (PGY-2s) Christian Gomez, John T. Moon, and Kenneth Shiao. Faculty advisors include Smyrna Tuburan and Jay Shah from the Division of Pediatric Radiology and Pediatric Interventional Radiology, respectively.

As residents, we came up with the idea of changing the traditional procedural paradigm of, “see one, do one, teach one,” by introducing a VR-based curriculum to simulate hands-on learning before doing to increase trainee confidence and decrease potentially avoidable medical errors. Furthermore, there are great benefits to enhancing resident training with VR in the era of COVID. With the awarded grant, we plan on developing and delivering a VR-based curriculum to augment Interventional Radiology training, and with additional plans to expand curriculum to applicable fields in intensive care training of both physicians and nurses alike.

Grant Awardees: Christian Gomez, John T. Moon (R1), Kenneth Shiao (R1), Smyrna Tuburan (Pediatric Radiology Faculty), Jay Shah (Pediatric Interventional Radiology Faculty)
